Oshaberi is a chat network formed with the goal of simulating "home" on the internet. We firmly believe that the internet and its diversity has become the ultimate form of communication. For Oshaberi's members, we choose to employ simple text to convey ourselves -- or virtual representations thereof. Many solutions exist to solve the technical aspect of a chat network; most of us have employed more than one of them. Drawn by the pull of others, one soon joins a new network and it can be daunting. Each new network brings with it a new identity.

Everyone goes through a phase of self-discovery and exploration, and many continue this process throughout life. A significant part of most who interact with the internet is to establish an online personage. This process is unique, and chances are you've had more than one. A common experience is merging one's online identity with his or her real life self. Oshaberi is the place where its OK to be "you". It is intended to be a permanent residence on the internet.

This network has a few differences that you should know about. We do not run any services besides those needed from a security standpoint. It is not possible to own a name on Oshaberi in the way that it is impossible to own air -- you can only capture it for a while. For the duration of your connection you may occupy any chosen name that is available. To be absolutely clear: one must be connected to have continued use of a name.

Many of our users simply never disconnect. This is an effective strategy for keeping one's identity, but it also has a valuable side effect: community. This is something some Oshaberi members may not enjoy anywhere else, and that is OK. We encourage all users to stay connected, and if help is required to help you achive this, please join #oshaberi and you will receiver help.

We hope you enjoy your time with us, and that you stick around. We encourage all manner of chat, be it retrocomputing, social channels or anything else. Few rules exist, except these as quoted from the motd "Don't make the opers angry. You wouldn't like them when they're angry." and "Don't do anything illegal."

The interpretation is intentionally left blank. We expect everyone to be a decent human being with a functional sense of humor and a reasonable sense of self-preservation. Much like other volunteer services, Oshaberi is run in the spare time by volunteers on resources largely acquired at personal cost, so we ask you do not violate the laws and regulations of the region in which you live, or that of the one your Oshaberi server is located in.
