Many names were suggested, and a pool was formed that included options such as robolita, nyetnyet.net, chinmusic, saunternet, blagolith, stenoweb.net, and dahizzle.biz. "oshaberi" was choosen due to it's meaning; "chattering, talk, or idle talk" aptly describes the purpose of this network. Discussion about technology, media, current events, the geoplitical state of the world, everday trivialities or chat among an already established community like the 68kmla. Oshaberi's founders wish to replicate the feeling of what it is to "hang out"; doing everything, yet nothing at all with a close group of associates.

With a name in hand, it was time to decide upon the network's implementation. This happened in primarily three parts, choosing the ircd, the network map and deciding if services were neccesary. There are many choices available for an IRCd, choosing one seemed an almost daunting task until Ulterior suggested UnrealIRCd. Unreal's featureset, ease of use and Ulterior's previous experience supplied much weight to his suggestion, and Unreal was accepted as oshaberi's IRCd.

or that of the one your Oshaberi server is located in.

The Map
Oshaberi's original network map consisted of "glinda" as the hub, with stenoweb.net and irc.tsundoku.ne.jp linking to it. Glinda was hosted on Ulterior's home connection, and while a more than capable machine for running the IRCd, it's ISP was less than satisfactory. Soon, stenoweb.net replaced glinda as the hub with irc.tsundoku.ne.jp and dillamond.680x0.com linked as leaf nodes.

The Services
The most hotly debated subject during oshaberi's formation was the issue of network services. Many other IRC networks use services that allow one amenities such as nickname management, channel management and a few other goodies; oshaberi does not run any sort of network services aside from the security server. While it may make our network a bit more like the "wild west" of EFnet past, it makes maintaining the network quite easy. We also believe that anyone may have any nick that is available -- unless you're a friend. Oftentimes this leads to more active administraction; we think that active admins are a good thing.

The Rules
The rulset Oshaberi operates on it simple; do not cause undue stress to the operators, don't do anything illegal. Individual nodes may have further restrictions, so be sure to read the message of the day for the server you're connected to or join #oshaberi for help. You can also find out more about the server you're connected to via it's wikipage.

Oshaberi is a chat network formed with the goal of simulating "home" on the internet. We firmly believe that the internet and its diversity has become the ultimate form of communication. For Oshaberi's members, we choose to employ simple text to convey ourselves -- or virtual representations thereof. Many solutions exist to solve the technical aspect of a chat network; most of us have employed more than one of them. Drawn by the pull of others, one soon joins a new network and it can be daunting. Each new network brings with it a new identity.

Everyone goes through a phase of self-discovery and exploration, and many continue this process throughout life. A significant part of most who interact with the internet is to establish an online personage. This process is unique, and chances are you've had more than one. A common experience is merging one's online identity with his or her real life self. Oshaberi is the place where its OK to be "you". It is intended to be a permanent residence on the internet.

This network has a few differences that you should know about. We do not run any services besides those needed from a security standpoint. It is not possible to own a name on Oshaberi in the way that it is impossible to own air -- you can only capture it for a while. For the duration of your connection you may occupy any chosen name that is available. To be absolutely clear: one must be connected to have continued use of a name.

Many of our users simply never disconnect. This is an effective strategy for keeping one's identity, but it also has a valuable side effect: community. This is something some Oshaberi members may not enjoy anywhere else, and that is OK. We encourage all users to stay connected, and if help is required to help you achive this, please join #oshaberi and you will receiver help.

We hope you enjoy your time with us, and that you stick around. We encourage all manner of chat, be it retrocomputing, social channels or anything else. Few rules exist, except these as quoted from the motd "Don't make the opers angry. You wouldn't like them when they're angry." and "Don't do anything illegal."

The interpretation is intentionally left blank. We expect everyone to be a decent human being with a functional sense of humor and a reasonable sense of self-preservation. Much like other volunteer services, Oshaberi is run in the spare time by volunteers on resources largely acquired at personal cost, so we ask you do not violate the laws and regulations of the region in which you live, or that of the one your Oshaberi server is located in.
